Family Dentistry

As a family dentist in Christiansburg, Dr. Burkitt understands his role in providing high-quality dental treatment for the whole family. A family dentist has the unique position of understanding hereditary oral health conditions by treating both parents and children.

This gives us insight into potential oral health problems that we should be monitoring so we are better able to deliver a personalized prevention plan. Your child never has to look for a new dentist once they become an adult which is important because forming a consistent dental home where you’ve formed a trusting relationship with the dentist is crucial to maintaining a positive relationship with dental care.

Seeing a family dentist reduces dental anxiety in children, provides consistent and reliable dental treatment for the whole family whenever you need it, and allows us to instill the importance of practicing good oral hygiene from an early age.

Whether it’s checkups, cleanings, fillings, or restorations, we will always do our best to preserve the health of your natural teeth before resorting to invasive procedures that could involve removing teeth. We believe in preserving the natural tooth structure as much as possible which is why prevention is so important with bi-annual dental cleanings and checkups.

About our team

Emergency Dentistry

As important as prevention and minimally invasive restorative treatment is, accidents happen. Whether your child has a tooth infection, dental trauma, a knocked-out tooth, uncontrollable bleeding, or a severe toothache, we’re here to relieve their pain, diagnose the problem, and create a treatment plan that will prevent worsening complications.

Since a dental emergency can happen at any time, we’re available for same-day appointments for urgent treatment. It’s important not to delay treatment in a dental emergency, because certain oral health problems can quickly cause irreversible damage or cause serious health complications.

What to expect at your first appointment

At your first visit, you can expect us to perform an oral exam to look for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, or oral cancer. We will take x-rays of your mouth to form an overall picture of your current oral health.

This can reveal issues below the surface that cannot be seen with the naked eye, such as tooth decay, an infection, or bone loss. After your first visit, x-rays will only need to be taken routinely every few years.

After this, we will perform a dental cleaning to remove food particles and plaque buildup in the mouth. If plaque has hardened into tartar, this needs to be removed at the dentist since it cannot be removed at home and can cause gum disease.

After scaling, flossing, and polishing your teeth, we will apply a fluoride varnish to your teeth to provide additional protection against cavities until your next routine appointment in 6 months from now. If we detect any oral health problems like cavities or gum disease, we will need to schedule follow-up appointments to treat these problems.

If this is your child’s first appointment, we can also help educate you and your child about teething, proper nutrition, how to prevent cavities, wean them off of pacifiers, baby bottles, and thumb sucking, and when to screen them for orthodontic problems. Children should see the dentist by the time they turn one or receive their first tooth.
